EGO & ALTER EGO
Every one of us has the similar morning ritual. We wake up, go to the bathroom, then stare in the mirror and prepare for the day. We might put on make-up or shave or brush our teeth and hair. We put on the face the world will see. But before you make yourself look presentable and ready yourself for the day, do you ever really look at the person in the mirror?
For centuries, Zen monks would meditate on this simple koan riddle: âWhat was my face before I was born?â They refer to this as our âoriginal face.â
Or if you like to rock out with your meditation I will quote a 70âs British rock band, The Who:
âWho are you? Who, who? Who, who?â
As we look into the mirror, we may notice the wrinkles around the eyes, the beard stubble or the extra pounds under the chin, but we never really see ourselves. Those are just the outside physical parts of our person. They are elements of the mask we wear. Inside is the energy that we use to define ourselves â the electromagnetic pulse in our being that holds the charge of our identity. This is the âwhole brain.â It is that part of us that combines all the energies weâre made of and individuates us from source so we may learn from each unique experience.
At our core, we all hold an energy. We tap into it for strength. It is the original energy; a touchstone we may use to center ourselves and realign with the universe.
It would be pointless for everyone to be identical and have the same energy journey, so we have created individuation for ourselves. Each of us has chosen a different frequency that is specific to us and will shape our personal experiences and our sense of identity.
This is our Ego.
Itâs almost as though we have chosen to forget so that we may learn. The Ego is our conscious thought. It has sectioned itself off from Source and has a constant need to know things. It wants to know what is coming next and to organize what has been. It also remembers and holds onto all the old stories and scars of our past. It wants to put everything in a neat and tidy box to study and it defines all of these things as âwho I am.â
Itâs not malicious. The Ego is just doing its job. It is there to rationalize and problem solve. We use it to translate for us. It takes the energy of the unfolding universe and translates it into physical emotions. While it may slow things down, it is meant to be there, so that we can learn and analyze what our life is.
There is the other side of Ego, though. The Alter Ego. Itâs not quite as kind. The Alter Ego is that part of our brain where we fight against that which we truly desire. Itâs like a malicious virus in our computer system that is continuously running in the background.
